Justice Pandemic’ed: Even the High Court Delivers

As an organization that fights for justice every day, the AIDS Law Project of Pennsylvania celebrates it wherever we see it prevail. Our quest for justice rings particularly true on the Fourth of July.Unexpectedly, the U.S. Supreme Court has given us three reasons to celebrate in recent weeks. In a June 15 ruling, the court extended job discrimination protection under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act to LGBT workers. It followed that on June 18 by blocking a Trump administration plan to dismantle Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, an Obama era program that protects young undocumented immigrants. Finally, on June 29 it struck down a Louisiana law that could have left the state with a single abortion clinic.Chief Justice John G. Roberts joined the court’s four liberal members on all three decisions and Justice Neil Gorsuch joined the majority on the LGBT job discrimination case.Although far more work needs to be done on all these issues, it is inspiring to see three more points of light in these dark times.Have a safe and peaceful July Fourth weekend.
